Fantasy News and Notes – Week 1 Is Here!

It’s here! It’s finally here! The NFL (and fantasy football) is back THIS week and we’re just getting started. Over the next few weeks we’ll be rolling out our regular season content featuring articles on waiver wire adds, weekly cheat sheets, buy/sell and daily fantasy values for both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Ryan Mallett – After an off-season of rumors, Mallett was finally traded from the Patriots to the Houston Texans in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick. The Patriots were looking to maximize his value early, but a so-so preseason from Mallett dropped his price in a hurry. Still, Mallet’s physically talents are a massive upgrade over the noodle armed Ryan Fitzpatrick. Mallett has a good chance to take over under center by 2015 at the latest.

Kyle Orton – Orton signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Clearly the Bills are nervous about the progress that EJ Manuel has made since drafting him in the first round last year. Manuel aside, the Bills offense really isn’t that bad with a good run game and a few weapons in the pass game, so there is a chance Orton could be fantasy relevant sometime this season. For now Orton is just someone to monitor in all but the deepest leagues.

Cut Down Day – Saturday was cut down day where all teams are required to get down to 53 players. There were no major surprises in the cuts, but there were some notable names released including:

Tajh Boyd, QB – New York Jets
Jeff Tuel, QB – Buffalo Bills
Curtis Painter, QB – New York Giants

Daniel Thomas, RB – Miami Dolphins
Mikel Leshoure, RB – Detroit Lions
Lache Seastrunk, RB – Washington Redskins
Phillip Tanner, RB – Dallas Cowboys
Ryan Williams, RB – Dallas Cowboys

Stephen Hill, WR – New York Jets
Josh Boyce, WR – New England Patriots
Robert Meacham, WR – New Orleans Saints
Greg Little, WR – Oakland Raiders
Nate Burleson, WR – Cleveland Browns

Alex Henery, K – Philadelphia Eagles
Connor Barth, K – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Champ Bailey, CB – New Orleans Saints
